When Life Changes, So Should Your Wardrobe.
As a personal stylist, one of the best parts of my job is getting to walk alongside clients as their lives and their wardrobes change.
Clothing isn’t just fabric sewn into shapes. It’s about who we are, what we want, and how we see ourselves. As life shifts, our wardrobe should, too.
One of my clients, let’s call her Ms C, reminds me of this every time we catch up.
From Corporate Leader to Student
When we first met, Ms C was leaving a senior corporate career, where she managed more than 300 people.
You could see that role in her wardrobe.
There were sharp navy and black suits, practical shoes, crisp tailoring, and not much colour. Her clothes said: I’m in charge—and she was.
But life was about to take a sharp turn.
She stepped away from corporate life to spend more time with her teenage children, before beginning a psychology degree.
She was changing and naturally, her wardrobe needed to change as well.
How We Built Her New Style
We started with my Styled for Confidence workshop—digging into her Style ABC.
Together, we figured out her:
- Archetype: the personality she wanted her clothing to express.
- Body Structure: the shapes and proportions that flattered her.
- Colouring: the colours that brought life and harmony to her complexion.
Before we even thought about shopping, we made a style roadmap.
That roadmap became the foundation for every future purchase.
Dressing for Right Now
One question guided every shopping trip:
What does a mature, professional university student actually wear?
Spoiler: it wasn’t another suit.
Instead, we built her a wardrobe with great denim, well-cut jackets, relaxed knits, stylish flats, and accessories that felt just right.
Everything was comfortable enough for long university days, but still looked like her: capable, smart, and put-together.
No more dressing for the boardroom.
Now it was about dressing for her next chapter.
New Career, New Message
A few years down the track, Ms C graduated with honours and kicked off her new career as a psychologist.
And yes, her wardrobe evolved again.
This time, the goal was different.
Her clothes didn’t need to shout ‘authority’ anymore.
Now, they needed to say, ‘You can trust me.’
As a psychologist, her clients need to feel safe, comfortable, and heard before she spoke a single word.
We softened the structure.
Tailoring became more relaxed.
Colour became gentler.
Fabrics became softer.
Out went the sharp lines; in came softer, more feminine details.
Her clothing quietly said:
“I’m here for you.”
All without her saying a word.
Your Style Evolves With You
More than ten years after we started working together, Ms C’s wardrobe now feels completely, effortlessly her.
She’s always loved a relaxed, boho style, and that hasn’t changed.
Now it shows up in little details: textured jewellery, gorgeous fabrics, subtle prints, and accessories that are totally her.
She still looks polished.
She still looks professional.
But most importantly, she looks and feels like herself.
Let Your Wardrobe Grow With You
Many people believe they need a completely new wardrobe after a career change.
But really, you just need a new strategy.
Whenever your work changes, your priorities shift, your family grows, or your confidence takes off—your wardrobe deserves to come along for the ride.
The best wardrobes are not built for who you were then.
They are built for who you are becoming now.
If your wardrobe feels stuck in a past chapter, maybe it’s time to ask yourself:
- Does my wardrobe show who I am right now?
- Does it support what I do now?
- Does it tell the story I want to share?
When your wardrobe and your life are in sync, getting dressed becomes way more than just picking out clothes.
It is an expression of who you are.
Big thanks to Ms C for letting me share her story.
It has honestly been a privilege to watch her journey and wardrobe.
❤️ your colours. Kx
