How to Turn Sale Season into a Wardrobe Strategy
Twice a year, the sales arrive.
Whether it’s winter clear-outs in Australia or summer sales in Europe and the United States, those bold signs showing 20%, 40%, or even 70% off are meant to catch our attention.
And they work.
Most of us feel a little thrill when we discover something that seems like an incredible bargain.
After more than 30 years as a personal stylist, I’ve learned that a bargain only counts if you actually wear it. If it stays in your wardrobe with the tags still on, it wasn’t a saving, it was just money spent.
Start in Your Wardrobe, Not the Shopping Centre
Before you leave home, spend a little time looking through your wardrobe.
- What do I actually need?
- Where are the gaps?
- Which items have worn out or no longer reflect my current lifestyle?
Maybe you need a new winter coat, some boots, good knitwear, or a jacket for work. Figuring out these gaps first helps you shop with intention, not just on impulse.
Write a Shopping List
I encourage every client to make a list before shopping.
- The item you need
- The ideal colour
- The best fabric
- The preferred cut or silhouette
- Your budget
The more detailed your list is, the less likely you’ll get sidetracked by tempting deals that don’t actually fit your wardrobe.
Shop the Right Brands
Not every brand is designed for every body.
When you know your body shape, coloring, and personal style, you can focus on stores that are more likely to have clothes that suit you.
Treat Shopping Like a Mission
Impulse buying is one of the main reasons wardrobes get cluttered.
- Does this suit my body?
- Does this suit my colouring?
- Will it work with what I already own?
If you answer no, it’s probably best to put it back.
Leave Room for One Surprise
Having a plan doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy shopping.
I always leave room for an unexpected find.
Maybe it’s a beautiful scarf, a unique handbag, or a jacket in a colour you hadn’t thought about before. If it fits your wardrobe and truly excites you, it can be the piece that makes everything else feel new again.
Build a Wardrobe, Not a Collection
A successful wardrobe is built over time.
Each purchase should work with what you already have. Every new item should deserve a spot in your wardrobe.
If you have sale items sitting unworn in your closet, don’t be hard on yourself. We’ve all been there. Learn from it, sell them, donate them, or give them to someone who will appreciate them.
The goal is not simply to buy more clothes.
The goal is to create a wardrobe that shows who you are, fits your lifestyle, and makes getting dressed simple.
That is the difference between shopping and wardrobe strategy.
❤️ your clothes. Kx
