How to Wear a Brooch, the Modern Way

For many women, the word brooch brings back memories of oversized diamantes, matching pearl necklaces, and very traditional dressing.

I used to think the same way.

The first time I wore a brooch was in the 1980s, pairing a big sparkly diamante creation with teased hair and lots of fake pearls. Later, I noticed brooches became a favourite for older women, so I decided they just weren’t for me.

But now, I see things very differently.

Brooches are back in style. They’ve shown up on runways, red carpets, and in collections from designers like Chanel, Armani, Schiaparelli, Carolina Herrera, and Vivienne Westwood.

It’s not the brooch that has changed.

It’s how we wear it now.

Start With the Mood You Want to Create

Like any accessory, a brooch should fit your personal style.

Before you pick one, ask yourself:

What do I want this outfit to say?

Classic? Creative? Dramatic? Feminine? Playful? Modern?

Your answer will help you choose the design, size, and style of your brooch.

Think About Shape

The shape of your brooch should look good with your clothes and suit your features.

Soft, flowing designs give a different feel than bold, geometric ones.

You can match shapes for a balanced look or mix them up to make your outfit more interesting.

Size Changes the Message

Size really matters here.

A small, delicate brooch adds a touch of elegance, while a big, bold one makes a confident, dramatic statement.

Pick a size that looks balanced with your outfit and suits your body shape.

Placement Makes All the Difference

Most people think of pinning a brooch on the lapel, but that’s just one way to wear it.

Brooches also look great on your shoulder, at the neckline of a blouse, on a sweater, on a collar, or even on a scarf.

Try out different spots to see what you like best.

Even moving a brooch a little can totally change your look.

As a rule, I don’t put a brooch right over the fullest part of the bust because it draws attention there.

Don’t Be Afraid of More Than One

Wearing one brooch can look classic and elegant.

Wearing three or five together, if you group them well, can make your outfit look modern and stylish.

Layering brooches is one of my favourite ways to give vintage pieces a fresh, modern look.

Colour Matters Too

Like your clothes, your accessories should match your natural colouring.

Choosing the right metal, stones, or colours can brighten your complexion and help your brooch blend in with your outfit instead of just sitting on top.

Give Old Pieces a New Life

One of the best things about brooches is that they often have a story behind them.

Maybe you got one from your mother or grandmother, found one in a vintage shop, or picked one up while travelling.

Don’t just save it for special occasions—wear it whenever you like.

A brooch can easily dress up a simple blazer, sweater, denim jacket, or dress.

Fashion always changes, but real style is about showing your personality with confidence.

A brooch isn’t just for fastening clothes anymore.

It’s a finishing touch that tells a story.

Sometimes, the most modern accessory is the one that’s been sitting in your jewellery box for years.

❤️ your brooch. Kx
